The female traditional costumes of Konavle, harmoniously made of natural materials, decorative Konavle embroidery, jewellery and individual clothing items, endow the pretty Konavle women special elegance for life. Although identical in its basic elements (bodice and cuffs, accentuated waist, ankle length skirt, headwear), the intricate costume details depict economic and especially social status (single, married, widow, etc.) of the women. The costumes embody the centuries-old culture of life in this region. What makes it unique is the embroidery, which is now applied to a number of decorative items. The costumes are closely related to the story of the production of silk thread that took place in the girls’ rooms each spring. Every girl would have to grow enough silkworms to produce yarn for their embroidery.
