Although one of the smallest islands of the southern Croatian coast, the island Lokrum captures the attention of many visitors. It is located across Dubrovnik, and is takes just 10 minutes by boat to get there. The island was once full of wild orange trees which is why its name is derived from the Latin word arcumen, which means sour fruit. Many say that this small island is haunted since it is supposedly cursed by its first owners, the Benedictines, because they were expelled from the island by Dubrovnik’s nobility. The story says that the curse can only be removed if someone collected all the wax that excavated that night. Despite such a gloomy story, Lokrum is the favourite among Dubrovnik’s residents, as well as visitors. Extremely valuable Botanical Garden, evergreen forest that provides shade, birds singing and the sight of peacocks that freely roam the island are just a few of its impressive details.
