Opatija, situated between mountains and sea, is known for its clean air because of which many consider it the ideal destination for aerotherapy. The possibility of healing yourself with clean air full of sea particles is what brought in many visitors since the 19th century who were looking to improve their general health. Opatija is often called ‘’Vienna by the sea’’ due to its history and architecture. The city centre is full of buildings from the 19th century, and its parks represent outstanding monuments of garden architecture. For over 100 years, Lungomare, a 12 km long promenade, invites its citizens and visitors on a relaxing walk. The promenade is jewelled with a sculpture Girl With a Seagull, set in 1956. The sculpture is the symbol of Opatija, and it hides an interesting story, as well as the identity of the girl...a secret kept for decades.
